Nicanor Segundo Sandoval, an antipoet and physicist from Chile, was born on September 5, 1914 in San Fabian de Alchico. He also became an academic, poet, mathematician and physicist. At 103 , the intellectual died at his Las Cruces home. He left behind the most irreverent and sophisticated Chilean literature.

Patriarch from one of the most prominent artistic families in Chile (he , the older brother to the singer-songwriter Violeta Parra ; author of Gracias a la vida ; uncle to the singer-songwriters Angel Parra and Isabel Parra; father of the artist Catalina and the singer Colombina; was born in 1914 in San Fabian de Alico in Biobio Region. He received many recognitions during his life. The Cervantes Prize 2011, was one of his many recognitions. He was also nominated for several times for the Nobel Prize for Literature.

He was the Professor of Mathematics at Liceo de Chillan as well as at the University of Chile. He grew up in the United States and United Kingdom and traveled later to other countries such Spain, Sweden and the Soviet Union.

His literary career began in the 1930s with short stories and essays. In 1937 his first book of poems, Cancionero sin nombre, came out . Parra is best remembered for his “antipoetry”, rebellion against the Chilean poetic canon led by Neruda. This rebellion was represented in books like Poemas and antipoemas, starting in 1954.

He gave the Caja de las Letras (Instituto Cervantes) his old typewriter in 2012 and a unpublished poem. Cristobal Ugarte, his great-grandson, represented him in the act of deposit. Cristobal Ugarte, his grandson, was the one who requested a one year extension to deliver Cervantes’ acceptance speech.
