A game of Roulette is always a good idea, but understanding some of the lingo thrown across the table can be a little confusing, especially if you’re new to the game. So, we’ve picked a few terms and definitions you’ll usually find within a game of Roulette, whether that be at your local brick-and-mortar establishment, or virtually when you play Roulette online, to help you grasp a better understanding of what you’re seeing and hearing within gameplay.

Action – this refers to the amount of money you bet over a given period of time.

Backtrack / Ball-Track – the outer rim of the Roulette wheel that stays stationary at all times. This is where the ball is spun into play.

Bankroll – the total amount of money a player has set aside ready to gamble with.

Black Bet – a bet put down predicting the next number will be black.

Bottom Track – the slanting, stationary inner part of the Roulette wheel, where you see the ball slide down before bouncing onto the wheel and into a pocket.

Casino Advantage – also known as the edge, this is the percentage of advantage the house has over the player.

Cold Table – any table where you or any other players have been losing.

Column Bet – a bet placed on one of the columns of 12 numbers within the Roulette table layout.

Combination Bet – a bet placed with one or more chips on two or more numbers on the Roulette table.

Corner Bet / Quarter Bet – a bet placed on a given segment within the table layout consisting of four numbers.

Dealer – an employee of the casino who staffs the games offered by the casino. For those playing online Live Roulette, a real-life dealer will be hosting your game.

Dozen Bet – a bet on one of the 12 number sequences found within the table layout.

Even Bet – a bet that one of the even numbers on the wheel will be the next place where the ball lands.

Even Money – a bet paying 1:1. In a game of Roulette, red, black, odd, even, low and high bets all pay even money.

High Bet – a bet placed on the table predicting a high number (19-36) will win the next spin.

Hot Table – opposite to a cold table, this is where players seem to be on a ‘winning streak’.

House Edge – a mathematical edge the casino has on a given bet.

Inside Bet – a bet placed in the central numbered portion of the Roulette table.

Line Bet – a bet that one of six numbers will win. This will be laid out in two rows of three numbers.

Low Bet – a bet that one of the low numbers (1-18) will win on the next spin.

Odd Bet – a bet that one of the odd numbers will be next to win.

Odds – the likelihood of something happening.

Red bet – an even money bet predicting the next number will be red.

Straight Up Bet – a bet placed on one number. This offers the highest payout within a game of Roulette.

Street Bet – a bet placed predicting one of three numbers will win the next spin.

Triple or Trio Bet – another term for a Street Bet.

True Odds – the actual probability of something happening.

Wager – another word for bet.

Wheel Chips – special chips used only to play Roulette.

Wheel Head – the part of the wheel in which the numbered pockets can be found.

Wheel Roller – the Roulette dealer or croupier.
